Nigeria

Active since: 2012

One World One Family Mission is active in Nigeria through the Spiritan Self Awareness Initiative (SSAI), supporting rural and vulnerable communities through nutrition, education, healthcare and social care. Through its integrated approach, SSAI works to improve access to nutritious food, quality values-based education, free healthcare and essential community services across Enugu State and other communities in Nigeria.

How we serve

Here are a few ways in which we serve

Nutrition

Nutritious breakfast and lunch are provided to more than 150 school children on every school day. Through the Biarienu Food Programme, students at The Embodiments of Love Academy and two government partner schools receive regular nutritious meals, helping to reduce malnutrition and absenteeism. The programme has also improved attendance, alertness and academic performance, while creating local employment for cooks, vendors and support staff. It helps ensure that children from low-income and vulnerable households have the nourishment they need to learn with dignity.

Education

The Embodiments of Love Academy (TELA) provides free, values-based education from nursery through secondary school for children from rural and vulnerable communities. Education combines academic learning with human values, arts, music, sports, civic learning and opportunities for skills development. TELA's approach aims to support the development of the whole child, including academic, social, emotional, creative and environmental development. SSAI also conducts Education in Human Values training for teachers through the Nigerian Institute for Human Values Education (NIHVE) and related programmes.

Health

The Aruike Specialty Hospitals in Ebe, Enugu State and Alike Obowu, Imo State provide free healthcare to people in rural communities, including medical consultations, laboratory services, surgery, maternity care and emergency services. Specialist outreach programmes extend this support through eye care, prosthetic limbs and paediatric cardiac surgery. The Gift of Limbs programme, for example, provides prosthetic limbs and other mobility support to people affected by accidents and disease.

Community Support

The Liquid Love Rural Water Project provides clean drinking water to drought-affected communities, while the Old is Gold programme provides care and basic needs to elderly people who have no one to support them. The TELA Skills Acquisition Centre provides training in areas including technology, tailoring and entrepreneurship, helping young people develop practical and employable skills. The Heart of Love Children's Home provides a safe and caring home for children who have experienced neglect, abuse, abandonment or other difficult circumstances.
