When even everyday illnesses became heavy burdens
When you travel through the Batticaloa district in Eastern Sri Lanka, you see a region still carrying the weight of its past. Years of conflict, repeated natural disasters, and slow development left families without stable healthcare. Hospitals are few. Specialist care is rare.

For decades, people across the district lived far from reliable medical support. A simple emergency could turn into a tragedy. Even everyday illnesses became heavy burdens. Children, adults, and the elderly all felt the strain.
In 2017, One World One Family Sri Lanka, through the Sri Sathya Sai Karuna Nilayam Foundation, began regular outreach in the region. Working with government hospitals and global partners, teams offered free consultations, basic investigations, and support for those most in need. Slowly, trust returned. People realised they were no longer alone.
A hospital for an entire region
In 2022, the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in Batticaloa opened its doors. It marked a shift in what was possible for the East. Today, the hospital provides cardiac care, outpatient consultations, and nutritional support. It gives special attention to children born with congenital heart disease, affecting an estimated 3,000 children in Sri Lanka every year.
At the same time, it supports adults with heart conditions, chronic illness, and other cardiac needs, giving whole families a place to seek care without cost or compromise.
The impact in numbers
The Mission’s work in and around Batticaloa has grown steadily since 2017:
- 63,450+ patients treated free of charge
- 3,430+ catheterisation procedures in Sri Lanka’s first Cath Lab in the Eastern Province
- 16 paediatric heart surgeries performed free of cost
- 107,400+ hot meals delivered door to door to elderly people, children, and differently abled individuals

Why this work is urgent
Sri Lanka continues to face economic pressure. Healthcare systems struggle to keep up.
Essential medicines and specialised services are hard to find, especially in rural and remote areas. Families delay treatment because they cannot afford the journey or the cost.
Free cardiac care and outpatient services in Batticaloa help ease this pressure. They offer early diagnosis. They prevent complications. They reduce the financial and emotional load carried by already burdened households.
Service built on partnership
This work is strengthened by many institutions standing together:
- Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka
- Batticaloa Teaching Hospital
- Eastern University Medical Faculty
- Kalmunai Base Hospital
- Ruhunu Hospital, Karapitiya Galle
- Hatton Plantations
These partners bring expertise, infrastructure, and collaboration, forming a reliable network of support for the region.

In every consultation, every procedure, and every meal delivered, the message remains clear.
No one is forgotten. Every life matters.
